Treatment Principles - Transforms phlegm, harmonizes the Gallbladder, regulates qi, and harmonizes the Stomach.

Secondary Actions - Courses the Liver, strengthens the Spleen, and calms the Shen.

Flow draws inspiration from the classical formula Warm the Gallbladder Decoction (Wen Dan Tang), enhanced with elements of Free and Easy Wanderer (Xiao Yao San).

Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, Flow is formulated to address stagnation of Gallbladder qi and the accumulation of damp-phlegm that clouds the mind. When this internal disharmony persists, the center, the Spleen and Stomach, can weaken, giving rise to repetitive, rigid, or unsettled thought patterns.

The base formula is used when phlegm and dampness stagnate the Gallbladder qi and weaken the center (Sp/St), causing thoughts and actions to become compulsive or obsessive. Associated symptoms may include anxiousness, timidity, worry, irritability, insomnia, dizziness, and vertigo, along with signs of phlegm such as congestion or “plum pit qi.”

To support emotional balance and calm the spirit, we incorporated Long Chi, Hu Po, and Ye Jiao Teng. Herbs from Xiao Yao San were added to regulate the Liver and promote the smooth flow of qi and emotions.

Indications: Obsessive thoughts, compulsive behavior, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, timidity, worry, irritability. Cautions: Flow is a mildly drying formula. Although balanced with herbs that nourish and moisten, use caution with yin- or blood-deficient patients. Dosage Recommendation Flow should be taken consistently for a minimum of three weeks before evaluation, allowing the formula time to gently harmonize the system. Acupuncture and Lifestyle Support: Encourage patients to avoid foods that contribute to phlegm and dampness. Recommended acupuncture point combination: Shen Men (Ht 7), Qiu Xu (GB 40), Nei Guan (Per 6), Feng Long (St 40), Zu San Li (St 36), Dan Zhong (CV 17), Zhong Wan (CV 12).
